2022 WASZP European Games at Mar Menor, Spain - Overall

by WASZP Class 19 Apr 2022 04:05 PDT 11-17 April 2022

An incredible event came to a close over the weekend, with only 3pts separating the top three sailors. One-design foiling at it's best, Italian sailor Francesco Bertone only realised he claimed victory after a photo finish showed he finished half a boat length ahead of his opposition, incredible scenes then ensued, with Bertone a mainstay of the class having been involved since 2018.

In second place only 1pt behind Bertone was UK sailor Ross Banham, who recovered from 29th at last year's European Championships to take out second place and have a massive run at the title with a very consistent regatta. While third place went to Swiss sailor Jann Schuepbach, who has featured heavily over the last two seasons of WASZP racing.

In other divisions Mathilde Robertstad continued her good form with 14th overall and first female sailor, while Mikel Vazquez from Spain claimed yet another Masters trophy from Ulrich Volz of Switzerland. We are expecting both divisions to be hotly contested at the International Games in Garda.

Mar Menor provided the perfect venue for a WASZP regatta, with a mix of cloudy, windy conditions and lighter thermal breezes in glorious sunshine. The final 2 days provided beautiful thermal breezes and flat water that Mar Menor is famous for and stamped its position as a premier foiling venue globally.

We now turn our attention to the International WASZP Games in Lake Garda in July. We are expecting a record fleet, with sailors of all ages and abilities encouraged to come. There will be something for everyone both on and off the water. Make sure you enter and join the swarm on the Lake. WASZP are working behind the scenes to provide some beginner coaching for the event and it will also see the junior WASZP_X competing internationally for the first time. While at the top of the fleet the competition will be unbelievable with so many sailors having the ability to win races. There is no excuse not to be there!

2022 INTERNATIONAL WASZP GAMES - READY FOR RECORD FLEET

With the European Games providing the perfect start to a jam-packed 2022 Season, we begin to turn our attention to the main event. The International WASZP Games will be the 3rd time sailors from all over the globe come together to race, socialise and go foiling in an absolute bucket list location.

Two years of postponements have not dampened enthusiasm, we can already see 70 entries from 15 nations for the event and we are still three months away from the start line. Early indications are that we will have over 20 nations represented and 180-220 men and women, boys and girls all competing against each other on the race track.

The community is something we have missed over the Covid break, however, the WASZP class has been brilliant at engaging sailors all over the globe, an absolute credit to the International Class and the community itself.

Diversity across the event will be a feature, with strong Masters contingents coming from the UK, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, France and Spain. These guys and girls love a party and we are sure to see the guitars coming out and beers flowing when this crew gets together.

The 16-25 age group is incredibly popular across the globe, spurred on by the SailGP INSPIRE program and the WASZP's ability to keep sailors engaged beyond their youth sailing has been a key driver. With strong representation from women in this age group, we could very well see our first female International WASZP Games Champion!

Either way, it is going to be incredible racing on the water, with some amazing talent in the fleet, a great social atmosphere off the water and an incredible opportunity for people all over the globe to experience the WASZP lifestyle first-hand.

CHARTER BOATS - NEW RACEHUB FEATURE

Leading into the International WASZP Games there has been a lot of talk about Charter Boats. While WASZP can not provide charters for this event due to the incredible demand for NEW boats around the globe. We have created a feature in RaceHub where for any particular event individuals can lodge their expression of interest for either looking for a charter boat or alternatively looking to charter their own boat to someone.

With the International Games in Garda (a very central location in Europe), we expect all EU and UK sailors to get their own boats to the event. There is also a container coming for 12 Australian sailors and the New Zealanders have arranged their own charters for the event. However, we do understand there are challenges for other nations with smaller quantities of sailors wanting to attend the event. This is a great problem to have and shows the popularity of the class globally and the appetite for big events.
