GWA Wingfoil World Tour Round One in Leucate, France - Biggest event yet

by Sensi Graves 31 Mar 2022 03:26 NZDT 26 April - 1 May 2022

The GWA is looking at an action-packed year with ten potential events in the calendar.

We're proud to announce the season-opener, the GWA Wingfoil World Cup France at Leucate, with competition running from 26th April - 1st May 2022. This is set to be the biggest GWA World Tour event to date with over 70 riders registered - Pre-Registration closes today - Visit here if you'd still like to compete!

The GWA World Tour visited Leucate in 2021 and we had an epic event with top competitors Titouan Galea, Balz Müller, Bowien van der Linden and Olivia Piana battling it out on the final day.

It's a rare event that makes it past the two-decade mark, but the Mondial du Vent festival has done just that. 2022 will mark the 25th year in the event's history hosting wind sports enthusiasts from around the globe. The Mondial du Vent is France's largest windsports event.

About Mondial du Vent

The location for the 2022 Mondial du Vent GWA Wingfoil World Cup is located on the Mediterranean sea, on the southern coast of France, close to the Spanish border. The GWA chose this spot as the season opener for the 2022 GWA Wingfoil World Tour due to the consistency of wind - over 300 days per year - as well as the wide, sandy beaches. The Mondial du Vent is fuelled by the Tramontane, a reliable and strong northerly wind that blows side/side off-shore.

The Mondial du Vent is a flagship event in the world of board sports! It was one of the first events of its kind in France and the first to really recognize the potential for windsports to dominate the area.

Momentous Mondial moments:

  • 1997 - The beginning: the best windsurfers in the world gathered for the first time at La Franqui for a speed test.
  • 1998 - Kitesurfing made its first appearance with Raphael Salles and Lauren Ness demonstrating the potential of this brand new sport.
  • 2003 - the first kitesurfing world speed records were established at La Franqui.
  • 2021 - The first stage of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup was organized despite the challenging Covid 19 health situation. A bold and successful move!
The Mondial du Vent owes its success as much to the commitment of the athletes as to the public who always show up enthusiastically. Both athletes and spectators alike brave extraordinary conditions to put on and enjoy an exceptional show.

In 25 years, the Mondial du Vent has welcomed incredible athletes, multiple world champions in all disciplines, such as Robby Naish, Kai Lenny, Gisela Pulido, Aaron Hadlow, Kevin Langeree, Carlos Mario, Youri Zoon, Paul Serin, Charlotte Consorti, Antoine Albeau and many more!
