OCC Roving Rear Commodore's report from Fin Del Mundo

by Susanne and Lars Hellman 19 Mar 2022 19:52 PDT

Follow S/Y Sea Wind as RoRCs Susanne and Lars head for Antarctica.

From Florianopolis, Brazil we spent 22 challenging days at sea along the Argentinian coast and up the Beagle Chanel before we finally put down our anchor in Puerto Williams Chile, the most southern town in the world. The sea border was still closed but we needed to do some repairs before our planned trip down to Antarctica. The Chilian Armada were very friendly and let us in on special permission so we were able to do our repairs. OCC-port officer Edwardo Jaimie Cruz Donoso alias "Lalo" and a lot of other cruisers greeted us with love and friendship and we do have the feeling of coming home.

"Lalo" is in charge of the sailing school Cedena and at this moment he and his friend Jasmine and 8 kids from the sailing school are on their way to Monaco to attend a regatta. Just imagine what an experience a trip like that will bring to these kids from the small town of Puerto Williams!! The best of luck to them! In Puerto Williams, the sailboats are rafted along the old navy ship Micalvi and the visiting sailors meet here to socialize.

During our stay, we managed to celebrate the captain's 60th birthday, Christmas and New Year in the most delightful way you ever imagine. Now it's eight weeks since we arrived and the boat is ready and inspected by the armada so tomorrow, we set sail down the Beagle channel to wait for a decent weather window to cross the Drakes sound. The penguins are waiting for us!

If you want to follow our trip down to Antarctica, go into our web page and choose the track from Garmin InReach or Iridium: syseawind.blogspot.com

All the best from Susanne and Lars Hellman S/Y Sea Wind
