by Lanzarote International Regatta 18 Feb 2022 13:41 PST 12-19 February 2022

Diego Botín and Florian Trittel debut in style in the second edition of the Lanzarote International Regatta in a difficult course to read, taking the lead with one day to go.

From the Canary Islands Elías Aretz and the Mallorcan Albert Torres are in second place while Andres Barrio from the Canary Islands and Antonio Torrado from Alicante are nineth.

  • In the 49erFX, Brazilians Kahena Kunze and Martine Grael are setting the pace. The battle to wrest the throne from them is being contested by several countries, including Spain, represented by Maria Cantero from the Canary Islands and Patricia Suarez from Galicia.
  • The ILCA 7s are dominated by the Brits with Elliot Hanson and Michael Beckett fighting it out for first place.

Third day of competition for the 49er and ILCA class within the second edition of the Lanzarote International Regatta and, after missing racing yesterday, the 49er fleet takes off at full speed, although with sudden wind shifts. Roles that the Spaniards in the 49er fleet have been able to anticipate, especially the golden pair formed by the Cantabrian Diego Botín and the Catalan Florian Trittel, who manage to snatch the leadership of the classification from the Americans, Andrew Mollerus and Ian Macdiarmid. "After a day without having a race, it was good to do three, we sailed with wind from the east and complicated conditions, choppy waves and little wind, so the race course was very difficult to read, wind appeared and disappeared, although the left side was stronger," explained the Cantabrian sailor.

Botín and Trittel, another Spanish couple wins the race and manages to unseat the Germans Maximilian Stingele and Linov Scheel from second place. They are the Canary Islander Elías Aretz and the Mallorcan Albert Torres, who moved up from seventh to second. For them, "it has been a day of very complicated conditions, with many wind shifts, although we were able to anticipate the changes and managed to be regular, but tomorrow comes a hard wind report and we will fight against the best," said the sailor from Arguineguín, but who currently competes on behalf of the Balearic Islands.

Canary Islands' Andrés Barrio and Alicante's Antonio Torrado, who started in third place in the first race, but a confusion with the colors of the buoys delayed them. "In the first race we did quite well, we finished third fighting the leg with Diego and Florian, as well as the British, but in the second leg unexpected gusts came in that made us lose many positions, while in the third we came back as to get fourth, but we got confused at the finish and lost a lot of time," explained the Gran Canarian sailor, who has currently managed to stay in the top 10.

In the 49erFX fleet continues to be dominated by Brazil, with Kahena Kunze and Martine Grael winning three of the nine races so far. The battle for the podium is being fought between Norway (with Helene NÆSS and Marie R diameterNNINGEN in second place) and Finland (represented by Ronja Grönblom and Veera Hokka in third place). Representing Spain, Maria Cantero from the Canary Islands and Patricia Suarez from Galicia are fighting to stay in the top 10.

The Spanish dominance in the 49er field and the Brazilian leadership among the 49erFX, it is the British who continue to prevail in the ILCA field, where Elliot Hanson maintains first place despite a black flag in the last race, followed by his teammate Michael Beckett. Olympic Medalist Hermann Tomasgaard from Norway manages to take third place in this day of competition. Joan Cardona and Joel Rodriguez from the Canary Islands are the top Spanish sailors.
