iQFOiL International Games Act 1 Lanzarote - Day 4

by iQFOiL International Games 28 Jan 2022 22:08 PST 24-29 January 2022

Pilar La Madrid and Nicolas Goyard lead into the final day

Lanzarote showed its best side on day four of the IQFOiL International Games. On this second last day, the race committee managed to get two course races and the marathon race in before the lunch break. After the break, all riders did another two races of slalom. At the end of this intense day of racing, it is still Spanish Pilar La Madrid leading the women fleet followed by Emma Wilson (GBR) and Maja Dziarnowska (POL). At the men, Nicolas Goyard (FRA) managed to stay in the lead. While number two and three switched positions, putting Luuc van Opzeeland (NED) in second and Huig-Jan Tak (NED) in third.

La Madrid unstoppable

Where Emma Wilson did come closer in the morning to La Madrid. After both had won one of the two course races, Wilson took the win in the marathon, good for double points. But in the afternoon, in which both ladies were in a different heat, La Madrid was again unstoppable. Where La Madrid won both of her races, Wilson only won one. The other one went to Marion Couturier (FRA), who is in eighth overall for now.

La Madrid: "I'm happy with my performance and learnings during all the races this week. Tomorrow it's all or nothing."

Wilson: "We did 2 course races, a marathon, and 2 slalom races. Crazy fun day, tomorrow we have the finals. Where basically anything can happen. Now it's time for some rest."

Goyard wins the marathon race and stays at the top of the leaderboard

Frenchmen Nicolas Goyard managed to hold the top position at the men, thanks to his victory in the marathon race. Goyard: "I'm really, really happy with my marathon race today. Halfway I didn't think I would end up in first. It was a really demanding race."

In second place, just two points behind Goyard, we find Dutchie Van Opzeeland. Van Opzeeland: "It was tough but good. It was fun. In my slalom racing this afternoon, I tried to keep it safe and just push out over everyone else from the top. It worked out both times, which is great. So, ending the day on a good note, I would say. Now, just of the water, I don't know the standings yet. So hopefully it's enough for the first spot. As the forecast for tomorrow is not looking that good. With not that much wind predicted."

Koerdel versus Barton

Behind Goyard Van Opzeeland and Tak there was a real battle for the fourth place between Sebastian Koerdel (GER) and Matthew Barton (GBR). With Koerdel winning both his slalom races he secured fourth place for now.

Koerdel: "This afternoon it was especially nice, as I had Matthew Barton with me in the heat. We were fourth and fifth going into the slalom racing. We had a little showdown and I got to the better end of it. But he gave me a good run for my money. So it was great racing."

Grand Final

Saturday, January 29th, only the top ten will race. This final day will be sailed according to a knock-out system. In the Quarter-Final, the number fourth till the tenth of the overall ranking will race. With only the number one and two of that race proceeding to the Semi-Finals. In that Semi-Final they battle it out together with the number two and three of the overall ranking for the last two spots in the Grand Final. In the Grand Final, in addition to the number one and two from the semi-finals, the leader in the overall standings will race. The finish order in the Grand Final will be decisive for the distribution of the medals.
