What is the CYOA?

The Classic Yacht Owner's Association (CYOA) is now entering our sixth year as a membership-driven organization to establish a classic yachting community.

The long-term goal since the inception of the CYOA was to create regional cooperation amongst those dedicated to owning, maintaining, and racing these beloved classic sailing vessels and we are proud to say that we have been reaching that goal each year with iterative improvements annually.

Our Board is composed of a representative of the major classic yacht regattas held in the Northeast, making up our Classic Yacht Challenge Series, giving an equal voice to shape the on-water-experience of all our members. Our Technical Committee, responsible for the Classic Rating Formula and issuing certificates for competitors, is comprised of experts in yacht design, sailmaking, boat building, and regatta management.

The intricacies of classic racing are complex and reflecting fairness while keeping it compelling and fun is the ultimate goal for the CYOA. By partnering with the Organizing Authorities of each classic yacht regatta and implementing a Technical Committee, we have managed to expand our membership and work towards the goal of making classic yachting a more consistent, inclusive, and sustainable part of our sport.

In 2022, look for the CYOA to expand our reach to recruit more classics to the regattas up and down the East Coast. From 12 meters to Herreshoff 12 1/2s, the more boats on the water, the better the experience for everyone.

Through our partnerships and relationships, we also plan on expanding the entire regatta experience. From reviewing Notices of Races and Sailing Instructions for consistency between events to enhancing the regatta party experience, even if it is just kicking in an extra keg or two on the docks, our goal is to foster a community of classic yachting enthusiasts for generations to come.

Do you want to get involved or learn more about the CYOA? Membership is just one part of joining. Help us share your stories or give us your feedback by contacting us at .
