iQFOiL International Games Act 1 Lanzarote - Day 3

by iQFOiL International Games 27 Jan 2022 10:52 PST 24-29 January 2022

Day three of the IQFOiL International Games started off with ideal conditions. The 70 male athletes got two-course races in. In which it once again became clear why the IQFOil class was chosen.

Close and highspeed racing created an attractive spectacle on the water. With Nicolas Goyard winning both, the Frenchmen managed to take over the top spot at the leaderboard from Luuc van Opzeeland (NED). Van Opzeeland had a tough day finishing 12th and 21st, resulting in third overall for now. Huig-Jan Tak (NED) stays second overall, after his third and second place today.

Beyond them, it's still close with Matthew Barton (GBR), Sebastian Koerdel (GER), Finn Hawkins (GBR), Sil Hoekstra (NED), Louis Pignolet (FRA), Adrien Mestre (FRA), and Andy Brown (GBR) completing the top ten.

After the first two races for the men, it was time for the girls. Worse luck the moment the girls were about to start, the wind dropped, and a rain cloud came over. Resulting in an unstable wind and the girls got sent back to shore. The conditions, unfortunately, remained the same for the rest of the afternoon. As a result, the ladies did not come into action for the second day in a row.

But with hopefully some slalom racing and the marathon, good for double points, left on the schedule all is still far from decided. The big question tomorrow, Friday, January 28th, will be which riders will get into the top ten and secure their spot for the finals.

The final on Saturday, January 29th, will be sailed according to a knock-out system. In the Quarter-Final, the number fourth till the tenth of the overall ranking will race. With only the number one and two of that race proceeding to the Semi-Finals. In that Semi-Final they battle it out together with the number two and three of the overall ranking for the last two spots in the Grand Final. In the Grand Final, in addition to the numbers, one and two from the semi-finals, the leader in the overall standings will race. The finish order in the Grand Final will be decisive for the distribution of the medals.
