Laura Grondin's Dark Energy takes second weekend of Davis Island J/70 Winter Series

by Julie & Christopher Howell 9 Jan 2022 21:57 PST January 7- 9, 2022

Fifty-seven J/70 teams savored spectacular conditions on Tampa Bay for the middle part of the 2021-2022 J/70 Winter Series at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, Florida.

The Dark Energy team led by Laura Grondin with crew Taylor Canfield, Scott Ewing and Rich Peale won the sixth and final race of the weekend to secure first place with 14 net points. Brian Keane's Savasana kept consistent scores to earn second place with 19 net points, just one ahead of John Heaton's Empeiria in third. Teams enjoyed warm temperatures, sunny skies and ideal winds between 10-15 knots.

Topping the 22-boat Corinthian division was Bob Willis' Rip Rullah, Peter Bowe's Tea Dance Snake and Steve Lowery's uno mas. Congratulations to another female skipper—Cate Muller-Terhune's Murder Hornet for gaining the title in the seven-boat One-Pro division, followed by Dave Kerr/Lee Sackett on USA1516 and Peter Barrett's Reset.

The Series culminates with the 2022 Midwinter Championship on February 4-6. Thank you to PRO Chip Till and the entire Race Committee for their stellar management and diligent work on behalf of the racers! Appreciation is also extended to Ed Furry of Sail22 for managing the Marksetbots during the entire Series including practices on Fridays.
