Two world titles in the Laser / ILCA 7 class mark out Nick Thompson as one of the best dinghy racers of his generation. His first world title came in 2015 after four previous times standing on the podium at Laser World Championships. Persistence paid off.

The British sailor has since proven himself as a top coach, and these days is technical director for the Guatemalan Sailing Federation and working with Juan Maegli in the ILCA/ Laser for Paris 2024. Tasked with restructuring Guatemala's sailing program from Optimists to the Olympics, it's been quite a cultural shift for Nick after being part of the well-oiled medal-winning machine of the British Sailing Team for so many years!

This breadth of experience makes Nick a great candidate for this week's Live Q&A with Road To Gold. What has Nick been able to take from the well-proven British system and apply to smaller nations with less resources? And what has he had to do differently when working in a leaner system?

Some of the topics that Nick will be walking us through:

  • Removing ego from decision making
  • Managing total training volume (on and off water)
  • Self confidence, affecting everything from line awareness to self belief
  • Finding new processes to keep developing
  • The pain and sacrifice of campaigning a Laser
Join Hamish Willcox and Andy Rice for this in-depth 60 minute Q&A and put your own questions to Nick directly.
