The second day of the 2021 International Masters Regatta started slow and ended strong. Kicking off the day with over an hour postponement only gave the competitors more time to strategize and communicate. Carl Buchan and his crew must have curated the secret to success because they simply owned the course today. Winning three of the four races sailed, Buchan moved his way significantly up the scoresheet from the middle of the fleet into first.

Going into today's races, Buchan told SDYC Director Alli Bell, "We plan to come off the line and stay at the top of the group in the first few minutes of the race. Consistency is what we are going for." And consistency is what Buchan brought - consistent winning!

After yesterday's races, it was apparent that today could see major shifts in the results. And so it did, starting with race five, the first race of the day. Buchan got off the starting line strong but not without some fierce competition following closely behind. Bill Menninger, who finished second in race five, and Tad Lacey, who finished third, gave Buchan a run for his money. Lacey used the first race of the day to set the standard for his remaining races, finishing the day with a 3, 5, 1, 7.

"We went sailing," started Lacey. "The first race was exciting with shifty and challenging conditions and the competition today was very fierce. We're going to go back out tomorrow and sail well. We feel like we're improving with every race despite the results."

The second race of the day, race six, continued to be dominated by Buchan. Andy Roy started the race fast. Although first around the weather mark, Roy was beaten by Buchan on the leeward leg. Roy finished in second in front of Rod Davis in third.

In race seven, Don Jesberg lead the fleet at the start, ultimately falling behind and allowing Tad Lacey to gain traction and steal the win. Scott Harris also came ready to play in race seven coming in second and holding that status through the final race, race eight.

Of course, the final race of the day was also won by Carl Buchan. The competitors are sure to come back out tomorrow with someone to look out for. The fleet remains close and the sailing remains tight, promising more exciting racing for the final day of the regatta.

Sailors enjoyed a dock-side social and live music today after the races. The final day of racing will resume tomorrow, Saturday, October 23.
