San Diego Yacht Club announced that registration for the 2022 Cruise Underway to Baja Rally (CUBAR) opens November 1.

The event, which is held every other year, is an organized power boat cruise from San Diego to La Paz, Mexico, in the Sea of Cortez. The 2021 Rally was postponed to 2022 due to the pandemic.

Qualifications to be considered are a range of 450nm at 8 Knots with vessels that are designed for at least coastal cruising. Participants should have at least some coastal cruising experience. The staff will include professional captains, a medical doctor, mechanical technicians and other support personnel that have significant cruising experience in Mexico. You do not have to be a member of a yacht club to participate.

The Rally fee is $1100 and can be paid by credit card while completing the online registration form at cubar.org. Selections will be made with early applications considered first, and a waitlist established if applicable. The event is limited to 50 vessels.

In preparation for the Rally, seminars for participants are planned for September 17 - 18. Topics include medical care, provisioning, safety, fishing, night cruising, customs/immigrations and other relevant information.

San Diego will be the meeting place for all boaters who should arrive by October 27. There will be boat inspections, immigration check-in and seminars. All Captains will meet to discuss the course, and a farewell party will take place on October 28.

The Rally will officially depart on Saturday October 29, and the first stop will be Ensenada, MX at the Hotel Coral and Marina. The next stops will be Turtle Bay, Bahia de Magdalena, San Jose del Cabo at the Puerto Los Cabos Marina and Resort, Bahia de los Muertos and the final destination will be La Paz and the Costa Baja Resort and Marina. The Fleet will embark on a 14-day adventure filled with parties and entertainment along the way.

The Kick-off Dinner and Fundraiser will be held at the San Diego Yacht Club on April 9, 2022. Interested participants should register on the interest list here.

CUBAR is a charity event with excess proceeds going to the benefit of the Sea Scouts and Junior Sailing in Southern California, along with donations by participants to the people of Baja California.
