World-leading British sailing brand Musto has partnered with 11th Hour Racing Team to create the new Evolution One Single Material (OSM) collection. The capsule collection, new for autumn winter 2021, features products made using one single material, which are easier to recycle than their blended counterparts. The aim of the collection is to create high-performance clothing without compromising on style or sustainability.
Before recycling a garment made with multiple materials, the fibres must first be separated, a tricky process which drains time and resources. Musto's Evolution OSM products are made entirely from polyester, facilitating a circular recycling process at the end of their life. The more we recycle, the less we need to utilise rapidly depleting raw virgin materials.
Charlie Enright, Skipper of 11th Hour Racing Team, says "these products have the potential to be fully recyclable at 'end-of-life', and this, combined with Musto's intrinsic attention to detail and innovative design, ensure we are well-protected against all conditions."

When 11th Hour Racing Team asked about creating an off-water collection, which they could wear in their everyday lives, which had sustainability at the heart of its design, we jumped at the challenge. The Evolution OSM Collection is the first step towards supporting a circular economy, and this project has made our design process become more considered and holistic in our approach to garment development. "
The Evolution Newport OSM PrimaLoft Parka (£300), available for men and women, is constructed wholly from polyester - from the main outer fabric, waterproof membrane and lining, to zip, trims and embroidered detail. Its black colour is achieved with recycled solution dye while the PrimaLoft Silver Eco Insulation, made from 100 per cent recycled polyester, provides the warmth of natural down without adding bulk.
Waterproof to Musto's BR2 Performance Standard*, the parka also features polyester seam taping and a Durable Water Repellent coating free of polyfluorinated chemicals for enhanced waterproof protection.
The parka has a pared back, streamlined aesthetic with no bulky storage pockets, allowing freedom of movement and ultimate comfort for the wearer, perfect for outdoor adventures.
The collection also includes the sleek Evolution Newport OSM PrimaLoft Active Jacket (£250), ideal for chilly days by the water when the wearer needs warmth but does not wish to compromise on freedom of movement. Like the parka, it is also waterproof to Musto's BR2 standard and utilises taped seams* and a Durable Water Repellency for protection from rain and spray.
The colour of both the Evolution Newport OSM PrimaLoft Parka and the Evolution Newport OSM PrimaLoft Active Jacket is achieved by using a recycled solution-dye outer fabric, which uses 85 percent less water and 90 percent less harmful chemicals in the creation process than traditional dyeing methods.
The Evolution OSM Hoodie (£80), available in Trooper and Black, and Evolution OSM Technical Crew (£70), available in Trooper, Rhubarb and Black, are also completely made from polyester, facilitating a circular recycling system. Thoughtful design and a sharp focus on detail, such as subtle tonal embroidery, make the clothes both stylish and practical as underlayers or standalone garments.
These products are also available in women's styles (hoodie, crew) and feature tapering at the waist for a comfortable, feminine fit. The hoodie is available in the striking morello colourway and black, and the crew is available in white or black.
The Evolution Newport OSM E-Dye Long Sleeve T-Shirt (£55) is a slick black underlayer that does not compromise on sustainability. It utilises the e.dye® Waterless Color System™, a pioneering dyeing technique which offers precision colour with no fading or bleeding, without using any water. This results in 12% less CO2 emissions compared to traditional piece dyeing.
While Musto continues to develop the process from end-of-use to the recycling facility, the launch of the Evolution OSM Collection is the first step in reducing waste and supporting a circular economy.
Musto's Head Designer, Shane Rhone added, "Products that stand the test of time are more sustainable than fast fashion and durability is a principle integrated into the design of every Musto product. However, developing the OSM collection has prompted us to re-evaluate everything about our design process from the beginning. What can we do before we even start designing a garment to ensure it's sustainable? We are stripping back our processes and being more deliberate in the way we design clothes."
