SailGP and CDP today announced a first-of-its-kind partnership, bringing environmental disclosure and sport together for people and planet.

The partnership aims to inspire and support cities and business decision-makers across the globe to drive impact within the sports industry, the associated industries that serve it and beyond.

Through this partnership, SailGP and CDP aim to inspire around 1,000 new companies to convert to clean energy and 50 host cities to disclose to CDP by SailGP's sixth season, expected to take place in 2025/26. Initial steps to encourage SailGP partners and suppliers to disclose to CDP, make clean energy commitments, and take action to meet those commitments include a cities climate charter that will see both organizations working closely with SailGP host cities. SailGP is also leading the way by being the first sports organization to commit to disclosing to CDP in 2022.

Earlier this week, CDP launched new analysis in its Working Together to Beat the Climate Crisis report. The report revealed more than a quarter of cities (246 out of 965) say reaching their emissions reduction targets relies on policy outside their control. Meanwhile, almost a third of cities (298 out of 965) say their ability to adapt to climate impacts depends on factors influenced by different levels of government, such as funding or lack of legislation. It is therefore vital for cities, governments, and businesses to work together to deliver fast-paced and effective climate action. This unique partnership will utilize CDP and SailGP's combined resources to help drive that action.

Dexter Galvin, CDP's Global Director of Corporations and Supply Chains said: "We are delighted to announce our partnership with SailGP, the global sailing league. This unique partnership between environmental disclosure and the sport industry comes at a pivotal moment for climate action. It is clear that the current global rate of change to bring us in line with a 1.5-degree future isn't happening fast enough. Without transformational, urgent and systemic change, we will be subject to the most extreme climate impacts across the world.

"Together, CDP and SailGP will use our joint platform to help cities and businesses further accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices, climate disclosure, and clean energy use for a more sustainable future."

Fiona Morgan, SailGP's Director of Purpose and Impact said: "Collaboration is key to climate action, so it's really exciting to announce a new type of partnership in sport with CDP. With our global platform and reach, we have the opportunity to carry the sustainability message further, and to raise awareness of critical environmental issues to a wider and more diverse cross-section of people around the world. We are excited to be the first sport to commit to disclosing in 2022 and look forward to seeing our score, however there are no losers in the race for the future, only winners for the planet."

CDP provides the global platform for companies, cities, states and regions to report information on their environmental impacts. CDP focuses investors, companies and cities on taking urgent action to build a truly sustainable economy by measuring and understanding their environmental impact. SailGP is a global sailing league that recently launched its Impact League, a world-first initiative to make sustainability essential to the fabric of sport and to accelerate the transition to clean energy.
