Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2021 in Trieste - Day 2

by International Melges 24 Class Association 3 Oct 2021 15:15 AEDT 1-3 October 2021

Three more races were sailed under the supervision of PRO Dario Motz in light conditions on the penultimate day of the final event of the 2021 Melges 24 European Sailing Series in Trieste, Italy.

Two bullets on Saturday went to Black Seal (3-1-1 on Day 2) of Richard Thompson steered by local Stefano Cherin, who moves up to second place in overall ranking now, while one bullet was grabbed by Miles Quinton's Gill Race Team (1-2-5) steered by James Peters, climbing to third, both from UK. Italian Paolo Brescia's Melgina (5-3-4) remains leader, taking a one-point lead into the final day on Sunday.

Corinthian top three starts from the fourth classified boat in overall ranking, which is Michael Tarabochia's White Room (2-4-3) from Germany, with Luis Tarabochia at the helm, who keeps its fourth position in overall ranking, tied on points with the third, with very consistent and enjoyable sailing against pro-teams. Only two points behind is second best Corinthian team to round up top five is Sergio Caramel's Arkanoe by Montura (4-6-2), who was really close to take a bullet, having been leading Race 6 since the beginning, but on the last second local Stefano Cherin steering Black Seal closed the gap and passed Arkanoe by Montura to take a popular win for the home crowd. Alberto Venuti's Skorpios (7-13-6) completes provisional Corinthian podium, sitting on the sixth position in overall ranking.

Having won two races on home waters and jumping from the fifth position to the second, Stefano Cherin steering UK's Black Seal keeps it tight into final day of the regatta in Trieste. "Today was a fantastic day! We enjoy a lot sailing here in Trieste with the Melges 24. Everything is going really well, also the wind is helping us a little bit. We have sailed six races in total here and we had a little bit of Bora here in the first day and for Sunday we hope to get some Sirocco wind from South with some waves. I'm very happy that the Class is here in my home town Trieste and everything is ready to do the Barcolana next week!"
