Noble Marine Streaker National Championship at Staunton Harold Sailing Club - Day 1

by SCOA 2 Oct 2021 13:22 PDT 2-3 October 2021

For the second time of asking Streaker sailors gathered yet again on the 2nd October for the Streaker National Championships sponsored by Noble Marine at Staunton Harold Sailing Club.

This event was the re-run of the postponed event back in early July after 2 days of zero wind left the fleet frustrated. 44 entries for the re-run looked like a good response to turn up once again, but the weather forecast did not look promising, and a rather depleted fleet finally took to the water. As it happened the wind forecast of gale force winds really did not arrive although plenty of rain did.

The first and second races were sailed in a moderate breeze from the SE, not a great direction for Staunton Harold. But the shifts and gusts provided plenty of opportunities throughout the fleet if you could read them right.

Race 3 and the wind was dying and shifting more to the east. A light and patchy affair where places changed depending on whether you fell in a hole or not.

Although Tom Gillard from Sheffield Viking had won the 1st and 2nd races, a 6th in race 3 still leaves this championship all to play for. Leading overall is Martin Penty from Beaver SC the defending Streaker 2019 National Champion who won Race 3 and recorded a 4th and a 2nd in Races 1 & 2. Steve Blackburn Leigh and Lowton 3rd overall also had a good day with two 2nds and a 4th. New to the Streaker Fleet Pete Gray from Staunton Harold is in 4th overall.

Tomorrow's forecast is for a moderate breeze from the southwest when races 4 and 5 will determine who will win the Streaker National Championship 2021.
