2021 Redoro Frantoi Veneti International Moth Worlds at Lake Garda - Day 1

by Moth Worlds 3 Sep 2021 16:21 AEST 31 August - 7 September 2021

A stable 8 to 12 knots Ora allowed for all six scheduled races to take place on the opening day of the Redoro Frantoi Veneti Moth World Championship, with strong performances from Tom Slingsby and Iain Jensen from Australia.

Over 150 athletes from more than 24 nations were on the waters of Lake Garda to thrash it out on foils.

Given the very high number of sailors, and considering the last years of the pandemic, the boats were divided into two fleets of equal number: the Yellow and Blue fleets. The first start was at 14:25 in order to give time to the Ora to stabilize: two for the Yellow fleet, three for the Blue, and one last for the Yellow.

The breeze between 8 and 12 knots proved to be perfect to highlight the talent of some of the best sailors in the world that this competition has brought together.

The Yellow fleet saw Tom Slingsby from Australia on top of the standings after 3 races, with 3 first places, all obtained with a good margin over the second placed helm. Currently in second in the Yellow fleet is Paul Goodison, England, closely followed by the Italian Olympic gold medallist in Tokyo Ruggero Tita.

In the Blue fleet we find Iain Jensen, Australia, in first place, with a performance that mirrored the one of Slingsby. In second and third places respectively are his compatriots Kyle Langford and Nathan Outteridge.

Iain Jensen said: "I am happy with today's 3 wins on the first day of qualifying for the World Championship. The wind was absolutely perfect and stable for the 3 races, with really tight racing. I can't wait to get back on the water for the second day."

The day ended in Fraglia Vela Malcesine with the "Funivie del Baldo Pasta&Beer Party", a social event that concludes a perfect first day of this "Redoro Frantoi Veneti" Moth World Championship.

On Friday the warning signal is at 1pm and in the evening the Persico Fly40 "Gala Dinner" is scheduled, a social event held here at the Fraglia Vela Malcesine.
