This coming weekend, 10th - 11th July, Laser sailors from across the UK will descend on Whitstable for one of the sailing season's favourite Laser sailing events.

Laserfest, was envisaged to be a celebration of Laser sailing, combined with a great social atmosphere. Sailors of all levels using standard, radial or 4.7 rigs are welcome to attend and compete. The team at Barton Marine are pleased to be a sponsor of the 2021 event and are looking forward to being involved over the weekend. Barton Sales Manager and Sailor Harry, Barton's rising Star, are on hand to provide hints and tips.

The idea for Laserfest came about in 2017 when a group of Laser veterans at Whitstable Yacht Club decided to create an event to encourage more people to get involved in Laser sailing. Over the last few years, the event has grown from a small club gathering, to the largest Laser Sailing Club Race in the UK. The last event in 2019 saw 48 sailors out on the water racing.

With Whitstable being Barton's home turf, the team have got together to share their top tips on where to eat and drink, alongside a few places to visit when you are not out on the water.

Where to drink:

  • Quayside Pub near the Harbour
  • Cumberland Pub on High Street
  • 12 Taps on High Street
  • Royal Oak on Tankerton Slopes
  • The Marine Hotel offers drinks outside on Tankerton Slopes
Where to eat: (you are spoilt for choice)
  • The historic Wheelers Oyster Bar - take away or eat in if you can get a table...
  • Birdies, country French
  • Crab and Winkle, fresh fish at the Harbour;
  • Tapas Bar on Harbour Street
  • JoJo's on Tankerton slopes, Mediterranean Cuisine
  • Mucini in Tankerton, Tasty Italian
  • Samphire on High Street, Bistro using local ingredients;
  • Tudor Tea Rooms (actor Peter Cushing used to hang out here), Great breakfasts and lunches
  • Jones on Harbour Street, Fish & Chips
  • Ozzie's on High Street, Fish & Chips
Chandlery for last minute spares: Staying busy off the water: Apart from Laserfest being the best possible reason to visit Whitstable, it is a picturesque coastal town steeped in history. Shipbuilding, sail making, oyster fishing and diving, there is a lot to discover and explore both on and off the water.
