Tynemouth Week 2021

by Neil Schofield 30 Jun 2021 03:16 PDT 23-27 June 2021

As the inaugural Tynemouth Week came to a close, we sat in the sun (with a beer) and reflected on what a great five days sailing and socialising we'd had.

Wednesday evening started with a light north westerly wind, 25 boats arrived ranging from a Miracle to an International 14. Nathan Batchelor & Rosie Kincaid in a RS400 drifted the quickest to pip Weed & 'Bel Gardiner in an Enterprise on the clock.

Thursday and Friday evenings had the same race format - 2 shorter races back-to-back. Thursday was windier and gloriously sunny again - the front positions were again taken by RS400s & the Enterprise. It was great to see lots of crew swapping as and different faces out each evening - the aim was for a low key, club orientated race week. Some sailors took to paddle boarding instead of the sailing. After racing team paddleboard racing was the order of the evening!

The evening series were won by Phil Murray & Neil Schofield/ Matthew Murray, second place Dave & Jackie Gebhard in RS400s - followed Weed & 'Bel Gardiner in an Enterprise.

Saturday morning dawned another glorious day - Ladies and Junior racing on the programme - visitors from Derwent Reservoir SC took most of the silverware. Oliver Shilling in Laser Radial took first from Mary Jane Piper from Tynemouth SC in another Laser Radial. Great to see a 29er of Ed Cody & Seb Shilling finish 3rd - less than half a mile from where the boat was built.

Saturday afternoon followed the style of racing we enjoyed during 2020 - short Grand Prix courses. Different faces at the front as the breeze built to 15 knots from the east with a steep chop at top of the course. The Lasers benefitted on handicap being able to sail deep downwind on these steep waves - the asymmetric boats had to sail out further out into the adverse current.

Sunday wrapped up the week with a full 180 minute pursuit race in a light northerly wind racing for the Tyne Goblet trophy.

We look forward to running the event again next year with some minor tweaks to improve the racing and social for both club members and visitors.
