Italian Open Moth Championship at Circolo Vela Torbole

by Elena Giolai 24 Jun 2021 01:45 PDT 18-20 June 2021

At the Italian Open Moth Championship there was an Australian double, with the two Olympic and America's Cup stars Iain Jensen and Tom Slingsby, followed by the helmsman of Luna Rossa, Francesco Bruni, third open sailor and winner of the Italian Moth title.

Second and third place in the Italian Championship went to Ruggero Tita and Francesco Bianchi respectively.

The star-studded fleet had Olympic gold medallists, America's Cup sailors, Prada Cup winners and multiple world champions in various classes, including Moth. The three days were very challenging for the fleet, with the first two days seeing strong winds and big waves, while on the third and final day the Race Committee decided to start the last three races in the morning, hoping for a northly wind and, above all, flat water, ideal conditions for the Moths to fly. The change of conditions, did not give great shocks to the overall open ranking, with the top positions remaining the same.

Open victory went to the 2012 49er Olympic Champion Iain Jensen, one point ahead of the other Australian Laser gold medallist Tom Slingsby, an America's Cup winner, defending champion of the Sail GP circuit and Moth World Champion.

The Italian superstar Francesco Bruni, after making the Italians dream in the America's Cup and winning the Prada Cup, held his own against the other champions, winning the Italian Moth title and finishing on the third step of the podium in the open classification. Behind him, in the ranking for the Italian Championship, the second step of the podium saw Ruggero Tita, who took a break from his Olympic Nacra 17 training for the Tokyo Olympics in which he will participate in pair with Caterina Banti. In third place was Francesco Bianchi, who had a great final day in the lighter winds, posting a 2-3-4 scoreline.

Next up at Circolo Vela Torbole, after this event attracted the big names of world sailing, the next generation of sailing stars will race in the Optimist d'Argento early summer regatta, which takes place from June 24th to the 26th.
