Hong Kong has been short of moorings for private vessels as long as anyone can remember. The Government’s Marine Department (MarDep) lists over 10,000 registered private leisure vessels competing for only 5,000-odd public and private moorings. There are very few berths for superyachts over 100ft, and the increasing number of multihulls struggle with marina access and mooring grids unsuitable for their beam.
MarDep has recently proposed additional mooring facilities in a number of locations, the biggest of which is the typhoon shelter at Hei Ling Chau. This has been proposed as a mooring area on many occasions, but has previously been dismissed by boat owners on account of poor accessibility and lack of primary services.
Until now.

We’ll get you onto a mooring, look after your boat like it’s our own, get it ready to use, put a crew on board, tidy it up afterwards, and handle all those annoying things like annual surveys, inspections, and licensing requirements. Call it a Yacht Concierge Service.”
There are very few really big mooring spaces in Hong Kong: that’s another problem solved at Hei Ling Chau. Catamarans are often not welcome in marinas on account of their beam, and that’s just not a problem at Delta Marina.
In Hong Kong convenience is everything. Hei Ling Chau has often been dismissed as a good place to moor a boat as it is not located in the middle of Central: it is, however, only 15 minutes due west of Aberdeen, 8 minutes from Discovery Bay, or 3 minutes from Mui Wo by Delta Marina’s fast limousine ferry.
