International Dragon HM King Juan Carlos Trophy at Clube Naval de Cascais

by Clube Naval de Cascais 1 Jun 2021 05:33 UTC 28-30 May 2021

In the 26th edition of the most emblematic Portuguese Dragon class event, the HM King Juan Carlos Trophy, Clube Naval de Cascais hosted fifteen yachts. The championship took place over three days at the end of May, where the seven races scheduled were held with all kinds of conditions.

During this championship, the Dragons filled the bay of Cascais with colour during the event. Victory in the opening race that awarded the Vincie trophy went to the Provezza Dragon team, world champions in 2017 and 2018, composed by Andy Beadsworth, Simon Fry and Arda Baykal. The final race of the championship that awarded the Stavros trophy went to Jeanie of Jean Rathsack with Diogo Pereira and Micheal Lipp. The battle for the podium was always fierce with five teams entered for the last day of racing in contention.

In the end third place went to Fever-Jupiter of Klaus Diederichs with Jaime Lea and Diego Negri. As for the top two places, we were able to watch a battle worthy of the America's Cup as the teams Provezza and 1Quick1 entered tied on points going into the final race. During the pre-start and with match race tactics 1Quick1 and Provezza tried to get out in a dominant position. Pre-start victory went to Provezza who did not let 1Quick1 of Wolf Waschkun with João Vidinha and Charles Nankin out of their sight. Finally, these two boats left the rest of the fleet, giving the race overall victory to Andy Beadswsorth and Provezza.

This event also counted on the collaboration of the non-governmental organization Sailors for the Sea Portugal, which during the championship audited the sustainability system of Clube Naval de Cascais. From this joint collaborative inspection of these two institutions, Sailors For The Sea awarded the Silver level to this championship.

This Championship was supported by Cascais Municipality, Visit Cascais, Turismo de Portugal, Vista Alegre and Sagres.
