What a great day our DYS sailors had at Staunton Harold Sailing Club on Saturday 15th May, despite the rain showers and fading winds.

Not only was it Derbyshire Youth Sailings 3rd event of the year but it was also our annual, Inter-county Event with Leicester and Rutland Youth Sailing, it was a pleasure to welcome 11 of their sailors to join us for the day.

There was a fantastic turn out, 35 boats in total, in an array of shapes, colours and sizes. Toppers, Lasers, Opi's, Comets, Fevas, Teras, a Byte C11 and a RS Neo, all holding their own battles throughout the fleet.

Racing started around 11 with a steady breeze, it wasn't long before we had a wind shift or two, which caught some of our sailors out, resulting in the fleet spreading out quite early on. Our Senior sailors did battle at the front with the Byte C11 taking an early lead, whilst the Toppers were swapping places mid fleet. It soon became apparent that last weekends DYS training day had helped quite a few of our sailors as they moved up the rankings.

Once everyone had crossed the line it was time to regroup and get straight into race 2. With a slight increase in wind speed and the sailors now into the swing of things, the fleet got over the line quickly. The Senior fleet were not letting the Byte C11 break away this time, positions were being traded throughout the fleet as all the sailors battled to get ahead of each other making for an exciting race 2.

After a well earned lunch break, with some rather nice cake and cobs laid on by SHSC, it was time to head out onto the water for the last race of the day. The race started with a drop in wind, which unfortunately continued throughout the race, but it didn't stop our sailors who worked hard to keep their boats moving to the end.

As boats were packed away and the now rain soaked sailors got changed, the results were fed into the computer ready for prize-giving, not a simple job with such a mixed fleet.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in 3 great races, especially to our visiting sailors and those who took part in their 1st DYS race and a big thank you to Staunton Harold Sailing Club for the warm welcome and a smooth running event.
