Cascais 49er & 49erFx Championship - Day 5

by Clube Naval de Cascais 9 May 2021 01:33 EST 4-9 May 2021

On the penultimate day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49er FX Championship light winds hit the bay of Cascais, allowing the 49er fleet to complete three races and only one races for the 49er FX fleet.

The Olympic classes bid farewell to the opening series and a single Medal Race is scheduled for tomorrow for each fleet, which will count for double points.

Bright day for Lima and Costa in the 49ers

With the wind from a different direction from the rest of the week, from the West with an intensity between 8 and 10 knots, the men's fleet started the show after 12:30 local time. Although the podium was unchanged, the different conditions brought different faces to the top. Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson from the United States maintained the lead with the Irish team of Robert Dickson and Sean Waooilove second followed by the Brazilian team of Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges. The fight for second overall is fierce with just a point between the Irish and Brazilian teams.

The home Portuguese team of Lima and Costa had a fantastic day, recording a 2nd, 3rd and a bullet to move up to fifth overall.

Grael and Kunze return to wins in the 49er FX class

The 49er FX class took to the water afterwards, picking up the remnants of the Westerly wind to complete just one race as the wind faded. The Race Committee tried looking for a place in Cascais Bay to continue, but unfortunately the wind did not help and the fleet were sent ashore.

The Spanish team, world champions in 2020, Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barcelo are the clear favourites to win in Cascais being 13 points ahead going into the Medal Race. In second place is the German team of Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke with the Netherlands team of Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz third.

In total there are four continents represented - America, Europe, Asia and Oceania - a total of 19 nationalities sailing in the bay of Cascais.

This championship has the support of Turismo de Portugal, Visit Cascais, Cascais Town Hall, Portuguese Sailing Federation, Cascais Marina and Vista Alegre. We also have the institutional support of the non-governmental association Sailors For The Sea - Portugal.
