On the fourth day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49er FX Championship the Cascais the race area once again did not disappoint, delivering epic conditions for the fleets.
The men again started first on the Guia race area, with a wind intensity of 12 to 14 knots from the north-west. Throughout their race period the wind increased in intensity, reaching 17 knots on average in the last race of the day. After finishing day 3 in second place tied on points with the leader, the American team of Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson ascended to the lead overall. The Irish team of Robert Dickson and Sean Waooliove had a magnificent day with two bullets and a second.
The Brazil team of Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges maintained third position overall by winning the last race of the day. Grael and Borges' team are tied with North Americans Ian Barrows and Hans Henken, who today had a less successful day, recording an eighth and two fourths, losing the lead they had held since the beginning of the event.
The female fleet of the 49er FX class splashed in the afternoon to start their racing at 2:00 pm in a stable north-west wind averaging 18 knots. Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barcelo's team maintained the lead with two bullets out of the three races held. Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke, from Germany, demonstrated that consistency pays off, recording two fourths and a sixth place, thus maintaining second in the overall classification. In third overall are the Danish team Ida Nielsen and Marie Olsen.
This morning, while the wind was not settling in Cascais bay, it was the turn of the Olympic sailors to join the Clube Naval de Cascais and the NGO Sailors for the Sea - Portugal in a beach clean. Around two dozen of the Olympic sailors collected approximately 70kg of varied garbage from Praia de Santa Marta in Cascais.
In total there are four continents represented - America, Europe, Asia and Oceania - a total of 19 nationalities sailing in the bay of Cascais. The championship takes place in Cascais from the 4th to the 9th of May and 15 races are planned plus a Medal Race for each class.
