This is a new race series for doublehanded offshore boats founded by Henry Bomby whose shorthanded career includes four Solitaire du Figaro campaigns. The objective is to cherry pick the best Offshore Races each year and combine them into one season long series. The series is for professionals, amateurs, Olympic hopefuls and young and up and coming talent looking to make a name for themselves.
May 1st was our first race a 16.5-20hr 91NM race run by RORC. The course started from the RYS line , went East past the Nab Tower then south of the Ilse of Wight and over to Peveril Ledge before 3 reaching laps of Poole Bay finishing at North Head.
Conditions were very light winds and strong tides. It was a game of snakes and ladders and some real determination was needed to keep pushing for speed as the darkness and temperatures fell. Well done all those that took part and completed the race in very tricky light wind conditions. Special credit to Timothy Long and Deborah Blair who as part of the Young Tigris initiative to open up opportunities completed their first doublehanded offshore race.
Here are the series results and like our Spring Series warm up races the results are split by just seconds.
Race 1 Results:
Overall: Huge congratulations to Jago (Mike Yates and Eivind Bøymo-Malm) for winning the race overall just 12 seconds ahead of Mzungu (Sam White and Sam North). Third was Jangada (Richard Palmer and Jeremy Waitt)
Mixed: The winning boat was Gentoo (James Harayda/ Dee Caffari) just 17 seconds ahead of Purple Mist (Kate Cope/ Matt Beecher). Third was Arcsine (Kathy Claydon/Phil Kirk)
Masters: Was also won by Jago with Jangada second and Aries (Kelvin Rawlings/ Stuart Childerley) third
Youth: Gentoo were first, Purple Mist second and Sea Bear (Peter and Duncan Bacon) third
Corinthian: It was Mzungu in first place followed by Jangada in second and Purple Mist in third
Jeanneau: Mzungu Sunfast 3200 was a first Jeanneau home, followed by Cora SF3200 (Tim Goodhew and Kelvin Matthews) and Gentoo SF3300
