With the easing of lockdown on 12th April, the RYA Training Centre at Hamble River Sailing Club was able to offer RYA courses for children over the Easter holiday period.

To be Covid compliant, groups of six were the order of the day and all theory had to be undertaken outside as well as the practical work afloat. Colour coded bibs and helmets helped to keep the Level 1 & 2 students in the right place at the right time.

Chief Instructor Harry Ives and his team of Instructors had good experience of running courses with these numbers and restrictions from last summer's successful programme. Harry has been with the Training Centre for seven years now, as a DI and an SI. After two years as second in command he stepped up to CI this spring, making the transition as seamless as possible.

The Centre, now in its 16th year, runs a range of RYA courses. This Easter saw 20 students on Stage 1&2 courses. Another 10 took Stage 3 and there were 6 on the Spinnaker Course and 15 on an Improvers Course. Courses for the May holiday, 31st May to 4th June, are already selling out. RYA Stage 1&2 and RYA Stage 4 are completely full. There are some spaces left on the RYA Stage 3 and the Improver Course so anyone wishing to join in should go now to: www.hrsc.org.uk/booking/type/rya-training

The summer courses which run from 12th July to the 27th August are also already being booked. The Centre which teaches both members and non-members has been sold out in the summer for the last three years.
