Canadian sailor Sarah Douglas from Toronto, ON, who was recently nominated to represent Team Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan this summer, will be back in action starting Monday as she will take part in the European Laser Radial Continental Qualifier in Vilamoura, Portugal.
The 2019 Pan American gold medalist will be joined by two other Canadian representatives who are members of the Canadian Sailing Development Squad: Maura Dewey from Victoria, B.C., in the Laser Radial, as well as Liam Bruce from Oakville, Ontario, in the Laser class.
For Sarah Douglas, this competition will be her first major international event since the Laser Radial European Championships held last October in Poland.
It will be a good test for the 27-year-old athlete as close to 100 of Europe's best sailors will be looking to secure the remaining European Continental Tokyo 2020 Olympic berths that are up for grabs at this event. Among the participants are medalists from the 2020 Laser Radial European Championships and the 2020 Laser Radial World Championships, Marit Bouwmeester and Maxime Jonker from the Netherlands, Anne-Marie Rindom from Denmark, Agata Barwinska from Poland and Line Flem Høst from Norway.
"I'm looking forward to racing with an international fleet six months after the European Championships," said Sarah Douglas. "Portugal's conditions will allow me to hone my skills on the ocean waves and I always look forward to racing against the world's best."
Sarah Douglas is part of the 9-member team that has been nominated to represent Canada in sailing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, slated for July 23rd to August 8th, 2021.
