The Asia and Africa Olympic Qualifier for Tokyo 2020 started yesterday in Mussanah, Oman, with a light airs drifter that turned much of the racing into a near-lottery, especially for the skiffs. With two different courses on the water, the race committee and local volunteers rose to the challenge of the day, got to grips and delivered the programme despite the anemometers rarely getting above 5kts.

Racing continues tomorrow (04 April) for all the fleets.

Forecast for the next couple of days is not particularly sparkling in the wind department. “A shamal wind will push out of the Persian Gulf today (Sunday) and into the Gulf of Oman. NW flow will veer more N'ly at the coast. Thermal effects and a return flow eddy develop offshore the venue later this afternoon, so watch for a very quick drop in breeze mid to late afternoon. A return flow of SE/S wind is likely by evening.

For tomorrow, another earlier build with peak wind mid-day through early afternoon into the low/mid-teens (11-15 peak). Similar to today, winds will die quickly mid-afternoon onward.”

Monday: more of the same.
