Lagoons in Asia: a Fleet fit for an Admiral.

Lagoon has been the predominant brand of cruising catamaran in Asia since Simpson Marine first introduced them into the region in 1986. Since then, there have been over 300 sold: ‘Lagoon’ has become a noun in its own right, like ‘Hoover’, which must be infuriating if you are trying to sell a cat that’s not a Lagoon.

The range of Lagoons is breath taking, from the ever-popular smaller models such as the Lagoon 40, right up to the spectacular Lagoon Seventy 7. In 2020 a great many people have realised that a boat is the perfect and ultimate way to avoid the crowds while enjoying safety, security, and comfort at sea on your private floating loft, while properly observing all the relevant social distancing regulations.

You really can ‘get away from it all’ just like that. Simpson Marine have both new and brokerage Lagoons available right now, and if you are looking for what is really the ultimate seagoing apartment, ask about the Lagoon Seventy 7. This is the Lagoon Admiral’s flagship: there’s so much space on this cat that you will be excused for forgetting that you are on a boat at all. The perennially cool thing about a big superdeluxe cat is that you sacrifice nothing - absolutely nothing - in the creature comforts department, while still getting a new view from your bedroom porthole every morning. The Lagoon Sixty 5 is only a scruple smaller, and no less comfortable. The interior of the hulls are roomy enough that different layout versions allow for either fore-and-aft or transverse bunk layouts. The cabins are so capacious that they are not really cabins at all; they really are staterooms.

The baby of the fleet, the Lagoon 40, remains the favourite of all. Brilliantly priced, this is a superb coastal cruising boat that will take you pretty much everywhere, and with enough pizzazz in the performance department to deliver proper sailing enjoyment. Minimal draft means that you can almost park it on the beach if you must, but make sure you are not going to be left high and dry by a falling tide!

Acquiring a boat is the easy part. Now it’s going to need attention and service to keep it in pristine shape. Fortunately, Lagoons come from Simpson Marine, which makes that easy, too. With offices all over Asia, you’re never far from a Simpson Marine Service Centre in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, or Indonesia. Quick enquiries are recommended – there’s a Lagoon 46 and a 42 arriving in Hong Kong early next year, but right now these popular boats are flying off the shelves.
