The Flying11s finally got their regatta season under way on the weekend of 7 and 8 November with the first round of the Allen NSW State Championships held at BYRA on Pittwater.

A fresh southerly prevailed for the first two races on the Saturday and there were plenty of capsizes and gear breakages between wild rides. Bailey James and Connor Radford from Belmont dominated the day with two wins in extraordinary circumstances. They dropped their rig after the first race due to a broken side stay fitting, but managed to find a replacement fitting and re-rig in time for the second race.

Sunday saw three races in lighter and very shifty conditions which placed a premium on good strategy. The different conditions saw a mixed bag of results on the day with wins going to Aimee Galloway and Bella Divola (Manly 16s) and Sam Stodart and Ash Napper (Manly 16s). There ended up being very little difference between the top 5 boats so there will be plenty of interest for round 2 at Lake Illawarra in February.

The Flying 11 will be a class familiar to most in the Australian sailing community. As a boat for young teenagers to refine their boat handling and racing skills it is without peer. Young sailors get the opportunity to learn spinnaker craft, have great rides and make lifelong friendships.

The current generation of sailors can be inspired by the outstanding range of champions that laid foundations for exceptional sailing careers by sailing Flying 11s. The list is long, but includes Malcolm Page (2x Olympic Gold Medalist), Nathan Outteridge (Olympic Gold Medalist), Lisa Darmanin (Olympic Silver Medalist), Michael Coxon (Skiff Legend), 3 generations of Barnabas skiff legends and James Spithill (America's Cup Winner).

This year the National Titles for the class will be held at Belmont on Lake Macquarie NSW in January. Given the shortage of National Championships being held over Christmas this year the Flying 11s will welcome sailors from other classes who want to try their hands at sailing an exciting double handed boat with a spinnaker. There are plenty of boats around and some available for charter so contact the association via if you are interested.

The Flying 11s are very lucky to have great supporters of the class with Allen sponsoring both the Nationals and the States. Liros Ropes and Vaikobi are on board as day sponsors for both regattas as well.
