How do you like the idea of a boat that’s fun, smart, easy to handle, economical to run, and offers first class weekend accommodation for 6 on board? That’s a pretty accurate description of the new Aquila Powercat 36, recently arrived in Hong Kong. Just put fuel in here, the wine in the cooler here, and the smoked salmon in the fridge here. Don’t forget the capers. This really is ‘drive-away’ boating.

Why on earth there aren’t more boats around like the Aquila 36, we’re really not sure. A motor catamaran is an absolute shoo-in for the Asian boating market, where boat usage is usually based on day tripping and weekends, with plenty of onboard party action. If that’s what you want in a boat, look no further.

The first Aquila 36 arrived in Hong Kong recently. All the happy new owners had to do was step on board, fire up the two Mercury 300 outboards (think: easy maintenance), manoeuvre away from the dock using Aquila’s brilliant joystick control system, and head for absolutely wherever you fancy. With a top speed of 33 kts, they were off to pretty much anywhere in half of no time. They took with them generous space for four on board in two double cabins (for an overnight expedition), both with en suite heads and showers, plus tropical grade air conditioning, a fully-fitted galley, an expansive cockpit that converts to a saloon when the doors are closed, a huge bow seating area and a great big swim deck. The three most important things about a power cat are space, space, and space. Sometimes in a different order.

After dark, close off the cockpit doors and create a handsomely lit floating lounge. If you venture outside to enjoy the stars - we really like this touch – there are LED-lit cupholders in the seating areas.

Design of the Aquila 36 comes courtesy of J&J Design Group. The innovative concept of the ‘sports’ powercat came from MarineMax in Florida USA. and the ultra-high build quality is supplied by Sino Eagle Yachts in China. All Aquila cats roll out of the shed and into the water with an impeccable pedigree to their name. If you are looking to get out on the water with the minimum fuss and maximum style, and you can drive – look no further. (Terms & Conditions apply: you’re going to need a Pleasure Vessel Operator’s Certificate. Start studying now, and call Simpson Marine while you’re at it.) PS there’s also a new Aquila 44 cruising in Hong Kong, and an Aquila 54 just sold in Singapore. It must be Aquila Time!
