It is with great disappointment that we are forced to cancel our second international event for the year. What was planned as a fantastic bucket list sailing holiday has now had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. As always the WASZP Class will remain agile and focus on the positive and not the negative.
As most of you may have read, the Youth America's Cup cancellation was the final nail to cancel the event for a number of reasons. The NZ quarantine rulings by the government make it impossible for every country to have equal access to the event and there are also a number of WASZP competitors who would be sailing in the Youth America's Cup that would enable more international participation for an International WASZP Games. We completely back the government decision to make the health of the NZ citizens the priority and as always we will remain agile in our WASZP Class decision making.
All is not lost though and we are extremely positive about our event structure moving forward. The 2021 NZ WASZP Games is now going to be allocated four days from the 15th-18th of April 2021 as a NZ Nationals and if a travel bubble is applied with some countries we can quickly flick the switch to create a Pacific Championships. Stay tuned for further updates.
The 2022 International WASZP Games will be held in Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy from the 9th-16th of July giving people plenty of time to plan for one of the biggest events on the sailing calendar with the salivating prospect of 200 boats at this event. More information to follow.
To add to this, announcements around the 2021 European event circuit and the 2021 American event circuit will be made in the coming months. There are many positives and the ability to run Tier 2 continental events around the world should enable us to put together a very good 2021 global event circuit. Couple this with a huge step forward in class management systems and value for members with the launch of RACEHUB at the end of 2020 the future is amazingly bright!
