The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is looking for Mates to come and support young people in recovery from cancer, and the deadline for applications is fast approaching. The charity is looking ahead to summer 2021 where it hopes to welcome young people back sailing, after having to cancel its on-the-water activities for 2020.

If you want to put your sailing skills to good use, submit your application to become a Mate by Monday 31 August. Mates get fully immersed in all aspects of the trip, supporting the Skipper in the running of the yacht, ensuring the safety of young people on board, and making sure everyone has a fantastic time, both at sea and ashore.

Full criteria and application information can be found on the Become a Volunteer section of the Trust's website: www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/volunteer-with-us/become-a-volunteer

Alex Rickman has been volunteering as a Mate with the Trust since 2018. He said the rewards are 'absolutely priceless'.

"Seeing how others develop and build their confidence, and the new skills they pick up, it's just amazing. It's also about creating that safe environment where young people can express themselves and relate to those around them who have been through something similar."

Bill Brown has volunteered on trips which sail from the Trust's base in Largs since 2016. He explained his love for being part of a team while helping to support young people.

"It's hard work at times, but you get so much out of it. You feel like you're playing a very small part in something that's very big for a group of people as they come on the trips.

"There is a feeling of satisfaction, that you're doing something significant. It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. You work closely as part of a team and have great laughs as you do so."
