Hobart Combined Clubs Summer Pennant cancelled this Saturday

by Peter Campbell 21 Mar 2020 01:10 PDT 14 March 2020

The final race of Hobart's major summer yachting series, the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant scheduled for today week, Saturday, 28 March, has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 virus spread.

Pennants winners have now be decided on eight races, the eighth being held last Saturday.

Also cancelled is the traditional end-of-season regatta and social gathering on Bruny Island, the Barnes Bay Regatta scheduled for Saturday, 4 April, and the Wednesday Midweek Series 3.

"Kingborough Boating Club committee has decided that it was prudent and appropriate to cancel the Barnes Bay Regatta," Commodore Peter Williams said yesterday, a sentiment echoed by Commodore Tracy Matthews of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.

Derwent Sailing Squadron has also cancelled all racing on the river until at least 30 April, which includes the first two races in its popular Autumn Short-Handed Series.

The Combined Clubs Committee, comprising representatives from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, Derwent Sailing Squadron and Bellerive Yacht Club yesterday announced the cancellation of the Summer Pennant Series.

As a result, the Summer Pennant winners for 2019-20 are:

Division 1: PHS: Doctor Who (Rod Jackman, RYCT). AMS: Intrigue (Don Calvert, RYCT); IRC: Midnight Rambler (Ed Psaltis, RYCT).

Division 2: PHS: Frontline (Ian Snape, DSS). AMS: 42 South (Mark Ballard, BYC). IRC: Wings Three (Peter Haros, DSS).

Division 3: PHS: Serica (Charles Peacock, RYCT); AMS: Young Lion (Steve Chau, DSS); IRC: Young Lion (Steve Chau, DSS).

Division 4: PHS: Hornet (Neville Georgeson, DSS).

Most successful yacht over the summer was Steve Chau's Young 88, Young Lion, which scored seven wins in Division 3 IRC and four wins under AMS. Midnight Rambler had five wins in IRC.

The closest pointscore was in Division 2 AMS in which Mark Ballard's Frontline beat Ian Stewart's Southern Swordfish by one point over eight races with one discard.
