52 boats enjoyed some beautiful sunshine and fresh air sailing in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour as they competed in the BuyAssociation HKRNVR Memorial Vase. Organised by Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, the race forms part of the Club’s Top Dog Trophy Series which combines the season’s pursuit races to crown a winning helm or ‘Top Dog’ for the year.
With 6 to 8kts consistent easterly, Race Officer Brenda Davies opted for a Hung Hom start line and a course taking the fleet into Hong Kong’s Eastern Approaches using a club mark at Junk Bay as the windward mark (to satisfy the requirement of the HKRNVR deed of gift - racing must be held in waters previously patrolled by the Hong Kong Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve) before returning to the eastern end of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.
A succession of starts based on RHKATI ratings started with the Pandora fleet at 1400hrs and culminated around an hour later with Big Boats Ambush and FreeFire. With the format of the race allowing the later starts to catch the slower fleets and overtake them, Ruffian Victory 9 was leading for most of the race before being overtaken by Dragon HKG59, Dragonfly, on the second Dock/Gate buoy loop and taking the win for the day with Victory 9 coming in second place.
Hong Kong had her party frock on today. The air was fresh and clear, maybe due to the current closure of a large number of factories in southern China. It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good!
Huge thanks to our title sponsors BuyAssociation for their fantastic and continued support, especially in these testing times. Fun activations and always approachable Buy Association have become valued and popular sponsors at the RHKYC.
