West Wales sailors should benefit this summer from a successful Club Race Team Management course run for 11 volunteers.

The course was run jointly by Neyland Yacht Club and Pembrokeshire Yacht Club for volunteers from across the West Wales region.

One evening was theoretical and then participants were offered the chance to assist race officer duties for Neyland Yacht Club's successful Frostbite series. This bodes well for spreading the race officer duties within the clubs in the summer.

"This has been a successful programme with loads of youngsters taking part as well as adults," said RYA Cymru Wales West Wales development officer Hester Walker.

"There are some really promising signs for the season ahead with the arrival of more race officers.

"The Frostbite series has proved to be a great success, getting great numbers of boats out on the water over the winter, but making this training part of it has meant it is even more important.

"Rhys Bromhall of Neyland and Julian Owens of Pembrokeshire yacht clubs deserve a lot of credit for the work they have put in on this."

Despite some difficult weather seeing some of the weekends called off, the Frostbite series has seen more than 20 boats getting out on the water in two divisions to cater for all standards.

There are future instructor training courses to look out for, with an Instructor Training Day on March 22nd at Cardiff Yacht Club.

The day helps instructors from around Wales to stay up to date, as well as improving instructional skills, all delivered by Welsh coaches and trainers, as well as an RYA Training update from Rachel Andrews, RYA Chief Powerboat Instructor.
