Dinghy girls survive the Arctic

Two dinghy sailors swapped their sails for skis and completed a week long self-sufficient expedition in the remote Arctic wilderness.

Georgina Hicks who sails a Laser Radial and Scorpion (Queen Mary SC / Salcombe YC) and Kath Broatch who sails a Laser Radial and Fireball (Port Dinorwic SC) faced extreme conditions with temperatures down to -20 degreesC and wind speeds up to 40 knots.

It was all hands on deck with survival skills for the duo as they made fires, melted snow to drink and hauled all their equipment in sleds known as pulks over 100km and up a 1500m peak. Sailing banter kept morale up as they battled with capsizing pulks and made up rules for overtaking and windward pulk.

Back in the UK, they are planning their next expedition and racing their boats in the frostbite series with a new appreciation of frostbite!
