The Midland Mini-Series started with the County Cooler at Notts County SC 3 weeks ago, before moving to Ogston SC for the Woolley Jumper over the weekend of the 8th and 9th of February.

The week before saw a nervous build up, as the weather forecast was watched on an almost hourly basis to see how the weekend might be affected by the arrival of Storm Ciara. The decision was made that trying to sail both days just wouldn't be possible, so it was reduced to a one day event.

Saturday morning saw the arrival of 32 competitors, a very healthy turnout taking the conditions into account. There was also a really good mix of boats, with 14 different classes represented.

The racing got off as planned with two back-to-back races. With the strong winds it gave the OOD, Simon Law, the opportunity to set a large course taking in most of the reservoir. The first victory of the day was taken by Ogston's Martin Honnor in his Solo, the overall winner from the County Cooler, and it looked initially like he was going to continue his form from the first round. Race two saw Ogston's Gary Knott in his Laser take the victory, just ahead of Martin.

All welcomed the lunch break and the opportunity to warm in the clubhouse and enjoy the excellent food laid on by the galley.

The numbers dwindled slightly for races 3 and 4 as the wind increased, and the temperature lowered.

There was no stopping Gary in the final two races, and with the three victories in the bag he took the overall victory, with Martin second, and the Enterprise of Andy and Victoria Gomm taking third.

The Junior fleet also saw some close racing with Ogston's Alice Hedley-Fenn taking three wins to lift the junior prize. Close on her heals was Victoria Theaker in her Byte, followed in third by Ben Knott.

Despite the alterations for the weather it was an excellent event, well sailed by all who took part. A big thank you to all the race officials, safety crews, galley staff, and everyone else who helped to ensure the event went smoothly.

The third and final event of the series will take place at Staunton Harold SC on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of February. Full details are available on the Ogston Sailing Club website: www.ogstonsc.org
