In line with the potential threat of a much larger volcanic eruption of Taal Volcano, the organizing committee will stand by the decision of our main regatta presenter, Standard Insurance in the cancellation of the Standard Insurance Subic Bay International Regatta 2020, comprising the Subic Bay around Verde Island Passage Race, the Subic Bay Cup International Regatta and the Subic Bay Optimist Championship.

We apologize to all our participants for any inconvenience brought about by this cancellation. We hope to see you in our future regattas.

The people of Subic Bay, who were once also affected by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, the second largest eruption of the century, naturally sympathise with all the victims affected directly or indirectly by the eruption of Taal Volcano. We send our prayers to the lives and communities affected by this natural disaster. We are also calling for donations for Taal Volcano eruption victims: anyone wishing to send support, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Amendment to the Notice of Race will follow. If you have any questions or concerns you may email us at

Letter from Ernesto ‘Judes’ Echauz, Group Chairman of Standard Insurance:

Dear All,

Much to our regret, we are requesting that the Organising Committee cancel the Standard Insurance Subic Bay International Regatta 2020, in consideration of the fact that there is an imminent explosive eruption within days or hours of the erupting Taal Volcano which has been placed at Level 4. This may either occur before or be an ongoing threat by the time the regatta commences on 14 February 2020. As the major sponsor, Standard Insurance would not wish the regatta or its participants, whether local or foreign, to be put at risk or inconvenienced in the event of such explosive eruption that may have a wider effect not only in the cancellations of flights but as well as power shortages in the Luzon grid.

Furthermore, as the leading motor vehicle insurance company in the Philippines, we are already utilising our staff in the servicing of our clients affected by the eruption of Taal Volcano. In addition to this, the personnel and assets of the PCGA 101st which supports the regatta’s race management, are on standby and awaiting orders from the PCG and PCGA for any Search and Rescue Operations. We also took note of Taal’s eruption being in the headlines of both local and international broadsheets, thus already discouraged both local and foreign participation in the event.

We hope for your consideration on this matter, and request that you kindly amend the NOR accordingly. Thank you.
