Harken Winter Series at Largs Sailing Club

by Martin Latimer 3 Dec 2019 17:21 AEDT

In its third year, Scotland's top winter series hosted 44 boats that raced in this year's HARKEN Largs SC Winter Series. With 18 races scheduled, 14 excellent races were delivered by the Largs team in varied and often difficult conditions.

There were some great battles over two course styles - windward leeward (Long Fleet) for the faster boats and trapezoidal (Short Fleet) for the single-handers and slower boats.

In the Long Fleet Josh Kerr and Ali Kent got to terms with balancing on their B14 in light airs to rack up 4 x first places to win over Martin Faulkner and Bill Forsyth's RS200 (2nd) with Phil and Carol Anderson's twin-wire Cherub hanging on to 3rd with the margin between 1st & 3rd being just 4.6pts.

In the Short Fleet it was a D-Zero benefit with the top 5 places (out of 28 boats including 8 D-zeros) going to D-Zeros in a well-mixed fleet. These pesky Zero guys are getting a wee bitty competitive leading up to the 2020 Nationals (at Largs). In truth the real battle was between Jon Basset and the previously unbeatable Alistair McLaughlin (Stork) from Prestwick SC with Jon posting 7 x firsts (and 8pts) to Stork's 7 x firsts but 9pts nett, third was Alan Henderson (PSC) and fourth Martin Latimer (LSC).

Largs SC are "pure chuffed" to have finally taken the mantle of winners of both classes from their friendly rivalry with PSC!

Thanks go to Harken who have stepped up every year to support the open racing at Largs and this year were exceptionally generous (supporting also the New Year race and 2020 Spring Series). Thanks to all - the racing couldn't have happened without our competitors, youths, volunteers, race and club secretaries.
