Melges 32 World Championship at Real Club Nautico Valencia - Overall

by International Melges 32 Class Association 29 Oct 2019 06:25 PDT 24-27 October 2019

La Pericolosa by the German shipowner and helmsman Christian Schwoerer is the new Melges 32 World Champion, crowned after a long four-day "game" played in the light wind conditions offered by the race course of Valencia.

La Pericolosa hence completes today the work the crew had begun last Friday when, with the British tactician Nick Asher, they gave birth to a real "show": in the five races held before today's match point, La Pericolosa never scored a result worse than a fifth place.

The only regatta held today has therefore turned into a two-boats challenge in control of the only crew that, basing on the game of the discards (with the completion of the race number six) could have worried La Pericolosa.

The team by Schwoerer therefore chose to "make the race" on the Italians of Caipirinha closing in tenth place (result discarded by La Pericolosa) and forcing the men of Martin Reintjes to collect a very heavy twelfth place, partial which takes Caipirinha off the podium, to fifth final place.

The silver in this World Championship challenge goes to the Italian Calvi Network of Carlo Alberini, after a World Championship that for this team has been in constant ascent; Calvi Network closes the event on the equals with the Norwegian Pippa by Lasse Petterson (with Simone Ferrarese as tactician) who gets on the third step of the podium. Fourth and fifth place respectively for the German Wilma of Fritz Homann and for Caipirinha.

The Russian Tavatuy closes his cycle of two consecutive victories in the last two editions of the Melges 32 World Championship, getting the bullet in the last regatta of the series in Valencia and finishing in seventh place in the general standings of the Melges 32 World Championship 2019

Christian Schwoerer - "Conquering this World title is a great emotion for the whole team: we believed, after the victory in the last event Melges World League of Barcelona, that we could make it real. I really have no words for what we have managed to do here in Valencia, which happened thanks to to the great work done by all the guys on the team. The crew, especially this year, has grown a lot, bringing our boat to be fast in every condition and obtaining today the most important title in this wonderful One Design Class".

Also the Corinthian ranking the success is for a German team, that of Kilian Holzapfel, which precedes by seven points the British Barbarians of Stuart Simpson and the Turkish Atlas of Mahmut Saral.
