The 170 boat fleet that lined up for the 2019 PIC Coastal Classic had been nervously watching the wind forecasts with more than the usual intensity, due to the strong breezes which prevailed in Auckland for most of the week.

Friday dawned with the wind well up, with the smaller boats getting underway on time at 0930hrs. The bigger classes started at 1000hrs and a mile or two after the start were hit by a squall and wind change in the Rangitoto Channel creating the unique opportunity for some great shots of keelboats and multihulls loading up in the 30-35kt SW breeze.
