Macau has a long and famous maritime history but modern-day pleasure boating is still a relatively new activity for this former Portuguese enclave. The Macau Yacht Show opens tomorrow (Thursday) and will provide Macau residents and visitors with an opportunity to experience first-hand the delights of the luxury yachting life. The four-day event at Fisherman’s Wharf offers in-water displays of both sailing and power yachts, a forum for industry and leisure marine professionals, sailing for the sport enthusiasts, jet ski demonstrations and VIP gala dinners.
Sponsored by the Nam Kwong Group, and supported by the Macau Government, the Macau Yacht Show is held in conjunction with two other major exhibitions organised by the Group; the Macau International Automobile Exposition at the Venetian, (24-27 October); and the Macau Business Aviation Exhibition at Macau airport, (1-3 November). Both of these events have seen substantial growth over the last few years, and it is anticipated that the Yacht Show will also attract the attendees of these two shows.
Renowned as Asia’s Las Vegas, Macau is in a unique position to facilitate the growth of the pleasure boating market in the region. With the opening of the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai Bridge-Tunnel project, Macau should see a substantial improvement in its economy.
Yacht exhibitors at this year’s show are a mix of international and local models with yachts ranging in size from a 140ft superyacht down to tiny 8ft optimist sailing dinghies. China Pacific Marine who have supported the show for many years will be displaying two sailing yachts built by the Jeanneau shipyard in France, the Sun Odyssey 440 and the Sun Odyssey 410. Both yachts are the ideal size and configuration for cruising in Asia. On the luxury power-boat side, Marine Italia will be presenting two luxury Italian motor yachts, the Azimut 60 Flybridge with its chic interiors and floor to ceiling windows, and the Absolute 60Fly with its well-crafted entertainment spaces for those who love to party. Local shipyards will also be displaying their yachts: these include two superyachts, the 110ft JP Yacht and an 80ft Maxthon.
This year’s High-Level Forum for leisure marine professionals is focusing on three specific areas of the yachting market: “Developing the Sailing Yacht Economy”, “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Yachting development”, and “Marine Economic Development”. The Pearl River Delta is at the epicentre of China’s hi-tech manufacturing and services, and is already the most economically vibrant area in China. Developing local leisure marine as part of the explosion of leisure spending on culture, fine dining, golf, supercars, and even private jets is what it is all about in Macau and where it is all on show next week!
