Nordic Folkboat UK National Championships at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

by Chris Baldwick 4 Oct 2019 11:35 PDT 21-22 September 2019

17 Nordic Folkboats competed for the 2019 National Championships. PRO Ken Kershaw, ably assisted by Gary Barnett, had some lovely conditions for everyone to play with on the Saturday with sun and a South easterly force 4-6.

Fleet Captain Chris Baldwick showed no ill effects of cracked ribs to bring Bonnie home ahead of Tak and FlutterBy in race 1.

Stuart and Caroline Watson's Crackerjack put a disappointing race behind them to win the second and third races.

Jeremy Austin's Tak was the leader at the end of the first day with 2,2,4 in the results.

If Saturday was sublime Sunday was a little different.

After a wait for a wet and soggy frontal system to pass through, the fleet got away in a filthy squall. Early leader Chris Hill's Padfoot made the most of a big shift just ahead of FlutterBy only for the race to be abandoned. From the restart Ed Donald's Madeleine made the best of some excellent lay line calls to win ahead of FlutterBy and Tak.

Further back, the results meant that in the last race Crackerjack needed to finish in the top four places and ahead of Tak to win the Championship.

Padfoot lead the final race from start to finish ahead of Madeleine and FlutterBy. Tak had been in fourth for much of the race only to have a problem at a leeward mark when her traveller exploded!

This allowed Mistral and Crackerjack past and Crackerjack just managed to finish fourth and thus secure the Championship win on count-back from Tak, in a repeat of the same situation in 2018!
