PROtect Tapes are a broad range of high-quality protection tapes for dinghies, racing, cruising and super yachts. PROtect Tapes provides a pro-active solution to chafe and wear prevention. It enhances performance and ultimately promotes safer sailing.

For more background information on PROtect Tapes read our previous blog.

What is a PROtect one design kit?

This is a set of cut pieces (strips and disks) of a variety of different tape styles and thicknesses designed to target problem areas in specific one design classes.

They have been designed with the support of professional coaches and sailors such as Fernando "Happy" Alegre (Optimist), Simon Payne (Moth), Nathan Outtridge and Iain Jensen (49er) and contain a large selection of Chafe, Mask, Shrink and Wrap tapes, which are all class rule compliant, to manage common chafe and wear issues on board.

There are 11 standard One Design kits available which cover the following classes:

  • Optimist
  • Laser
  • Moth
  • 29er
  • 49er/49er FX
  • Nacra 17
  • SB20
  • J70
  • Topper
  • Melges 20 and Melges 32

There are many common themes addressed in these kits. For example, protection for centreboard cases, mast steps and mast leading edges, spreader tips and bowsprits etc. This means that whilst the range is limited to 11 classes, the kits can be bought and used for other similar classes.

Based on this principle, PROtect Tapes do also have a kit called 12' Dinghy which is a generic set of tapes which can be used to target standard areas of potential damage on most small dinghies.

So why PROtect?

PROtect Tapes are a relatively small upfront investment in protecting your hull, deck, mast and sails from wear and damage. Sailing professionals and competitive racers are the biggest users of PROtect Tapes because they know that one chafed line or damaged sail can be the difference between success or failure. But reliability and safety are important considerations for all sailors, regardless of the fact that pro-active maintenance can save you money in the long term!
