The Tulane sailing team finished in ninth place among 16 top teams in the Women's Showcase Semifinal Regatta, totaling 12 top 10 finishes on Sunday while also winning the first race of the day.
"The girls came out focused today and really worked hard to minimize risks and look for high percentage moves around the race course," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We made a couple mistakes at the end of the day that we certainly have learned from, but fortunately we had sailed so solidly to that point we had assured ourselves of a finish in the top nine."
Tulane's finish earned the team a spot in the Women's Showcase Final held at Navy on Oct. 12-13, where the nation's top 18 teams will compete for the title.
After coming in first in the first race of the day, skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan alongside crews Amelia Schofield and Grace Siwicki recorded top 10 finishes in all but one of the remaining six Division A races. Tulane finished in eighth place among the A Division boats, totaling 139 points.
Skipper Caroline Benson continued with her impressive performance on Sunday to finish out the regatta, pairing with crews Kara Scully and Lydia Brown to earn a seventh-place finish among the B Division boats. Totaling 129 points, the women earned top 10 finishes in five of six races with a best fourth-place performance this afternoon.
The Green Wave totaled 268 points to defeat Hobart and William (291), USF (314), St. Mary's (316), Jacksonville (334), Connecticut College (358), Eckerd (370) and Old Dominion (403) in the regatta.
Yale finished first in the semifinal, totaling 147 points, followed by Harvard with 151 and Dartmouth with 187.
"To have established ourselves as an indisputable top 20 team so early in the program's campaign is a great achievement," Higgins said. "But we're certainly not done yet and know we have a long way to go in achieving greater success."
Tulane is back in action next weekend, with the team competing in the Coed Showcase Semifinals at St. Mary's.
