Burnham Week 2019 - Day 3

A third day of fantastic sunshine and fairly consistent Easterlies meant another stunning day afloat on the Crouch as Burnham Week enjoyed Day 3 and Burnham Town saw a packed Quay Day with live music and displays, stalls and family fun.
In the Multihull Class much of the fleet chose to start down by the committee boat end of the line, with a tight squeeze for some to get on course side, with one being forced over the line and having to return. The second rounding of Greenward saw the Multihulls round with the day boats, with two dragons and a multihull having a good tussle at the mark. Threedom, John Galloway won giving him runner up for the weekend, with Nick Wood in Origami taking the weekend trophy.
Class One and Two also enjoyed a close and tight start, but they were all vying pin end. Yet again. John Saunders in his Elan 31 Jeannie got in prime spot being pushed up by Exile. Several boats in the mix were slow to respond to the Up Up shouts from Exile, Paul Trueman's X37, but all got away penalty free. At Greenward, Intense, the Corby sailed by Lizzie Brawn dropped on the mark and rounded first, followed by Exile. Jackal followed with Jeannie chasing hard. Eclipse rounded next, with the small ¼ ton Quillet owned by Ron Nichols rounding a bit ahead of Skulkduggery, the ¾ tonner. Jeannie won today giving her runner up for the weekend with Jackal second. Intense, owned by Lizzie Brown won the weekend. Intense also was part of the Royal Burnham Yacht Club's winning team along with Clive Cherry and Daryl Mylroie in Eclipse for the Burnham Team Trophy.
Class Five saw Ophelia start at the committee boat end, with Tifano, the Folk Boat belonging to Ant Law, and Grace and Danger, Spring Chicken and Traigh up towards the pin end. The UFO Traigh and the SJ 27 Grace and Danger had to lose speed in order not to be OCS in the fair tide, but Spring Chicken sailed by Phillip Harbott hit the line fully powered. The fleet headed down river to Clarks the lead two, Grace and Danger and Ophelia suffered in a header, allowing Spring Chicken to close the gap. They then ran up to Greenward, rounding to starboard. The Spring had run up close under the South Shore and reached in towards the mark, rounding with Ophelia, the larger MG. Grace and Danger had rounded first and headed off on the fair tide beat down to Inner Crouch. By the finish, Grace and Danger took line honours about a minute or so ahead of Ophelia who was just half a minute ahead of Spring Chicken. Spring Chicken won to take the weekend from Ophelia. The Burnham Sailing Club won the local handicap team trophy with Spring Chicken and Ron Woolhead in Toucan.
Class 6 saw Toucan stretch ahead and Spangle worked hard to keep in contact with them. Emily Jane the Drascombe Lugger beat well down to Clarks with the tide before returning to round Greenward, choosing the North Shore. Toucan won the weekend, with David Hill's Spangle Runners Up. Emily Jane owned by Tom Keeper was awarded best newcomer.
The Dragons again fought hard with close racing and much on the water discussion. Beauty and the Beast owned by Peter Marchant won the race today, with Pageboy XI second and Vivacious, Dan Wastnage, third. Overall Peter Marchant won on countback from Mark Wade's Avalanche, with Pageboy XI third.
In the RBOD fleet, Ariel and Red Jacket were OCS and by the time they had cleared the line, some way off the fleet. On the run up to Horse Shoal, Red Jacket chose to do a South Shore flier, as the rest of the fleet had followed the leader Mandarin across to the North Shore. On the next run, Red Jacket still fighting to catch up the lost ground took the North shore, rounding Pinto with RB 3 and Ariel. Mandarin, owned by Will Dallimore won Aquamarine second and Simon Hollington in Beryl third. Overall, Mandarin won the weekend, with Red Jacket second and Aqua Marine just a point behind in third.
The Elites were closely matched at the start of the first race of the day, enjoying a long fair tide beat down to Clarks before coming up to Greenward with the majority of the fleets. Legs Eleven, the weekend leader rounded just ahead of the second boat and the fleet then headed off downriver on their second beat, still with some ebb under them cross tacking throughout. Legs Eleven won from Oink Squeal. The second race of the day was much shorter, just Inner Crouch and home, with a foul tide beat down and a fair tide run home to finish their weekend off. Paul Fisk took race 6 to give him 6 wins. Overall, Legs Eleven won from Oink Squeal and Serious Moonlight third overall.
The 707s was again dominated by Baby Beluga, owned by Debbie de Boltz, with Tony Hall and Martyn Randall second in Cezanne. Overall, Beluga won the weekend.
The RCOD fleet again saw Martin Makey in Corinna win, with John Waples in Corpo Santo second, and Sue Law in Coralie third. Overall, Corinna won the weekend from Corpo Santo with Cormorant third.
When the Squibs were heading to Greenward, Phil Aspinall in Guy Fawkes and Squiggle, Jono Brown, took the North Shore, the remainder of the fleet taking the South, Squiggle rounded first just ahead of Guy Fawkes, Robert Coyle in Humphrey came across to round third. Today, Jack Grogan in Knock Knock took first, Humphrey in second, with Guy Fawkes third. Squiggle and Crackers were OCS. Overall, Knock Knock won the weekend, with Humphrey runner up. Guy Fawkes were third.
Just three Ospreys raced today and series leader Dark Matter won their first race and the weekend overall prize.
The Bank Holiday dinghy regatta concluded at the Burnham Sailing Club today in front of a packed seawall for Quay Day. The strong Phantom fleet raced hard, and Bob Portway in Mandy took another two firsts to take the series. The dinghy handicap fleet was again dominated by Keith Fedi in his Finn, he won twice today and took the weekend. Runner up was Jemima Cook (RCYC) in her Feva. The dinghies can race again on Wednesday evening in the John Torrance Memorial Race at the Burnham Sailing Club with entry details online at www.burnhamweek.com and Saturday again from the BSC.
