RS Vareos at the Weston Open for Single Handers

by Cheryl Wood 26 Aug 2019 08:28 PDT 17-18 August 2019

On the 17th and 18th August the RS Vareo fleet visited Weston Sailing Club to take part in their single hander open event. Perfect conditions were forecast with camping onsite. Westerly winds and temperatures of 20+ degrees sunshine. The fleet joined the event and sailed the trapezoid course.

Race one of the day kicked off the weekend with a start line debate on where the windward mark was? This meant two RS Vareo missed the start gun and gave Cheryl Wood the glory of rounding the windward mark first in the RS Vareo fleet. With a wrong decision down the first run Luke Fisher came through closely followed by Alan Bassett to push Cheryl down to third with Mike Dicker heading up the rear which stayed the same until the end.

Race two Luke and Cheryl battled it out from the start with the lead changing throughout the race. Luke showed his spinnaker skills to come first with Cheryl 2nd.

During the last race of the day the fleet started to feel the effects of a wind increase and Alan was our first casualty to the shore. While on the water Luke was struggling to keep up as Cheryl took the lead and won the final race of the day. Mike stuck out the race in third to achieve his highest place ever at an RS Vareo event.

With racing done for the day the fleet returned to shore, heading straight to the bar for drinks and fish supper!! We were joined by our very own RS Vareo Groupies who always look after us!..

Sunday was another day of close competitive racing with no clear winner on the cards. The fleet stuck out just two of the day's three races as the wind increased getting to a near abandon level. The results however were consistent throughout both races with final results from day one carried forward:

  • Luke Fisher 1st
  • Cheryl Wood 2nd
  • Alan Bassett 3rd
  • Mike Dicker 4th

Well done to Luke who picked up third overall in the main fleet. At prize-giving time the RS Vareo fleet benefited from some top branded Rooster Sailing kit donated by our Chair Cheryl.

It was a great weekend ran by a well organised and friendly sailing club. Well done Weston SC! We shall see you next year!
