2019 J/24 US National Championship at Rochester Yacht Club - Day 2

by Julie & Christopher Howell 24 Aug 2019 19:08 PDT 23-25 August 2019

Day two of the J/24 US National Championship hosted by Rochester Yacht Club in New York was a challenging one for the 46 J/24 teams. The scorecard lit up with U-Flag and Black-Flag penalties, as three more races went in the books (for a total of six) in winds of 5-7 knots and choppy seas.

Will Welles' Buckaroo clung to the lead, despite a UFD in race five, which was his discard. The current J/24 World Champion is now counting scores 2,3,2,3,5 for 15 net points. William Bomar's Bangor Packet has put together a solid series including two bullets for 19 points and second place. Travis Odenbach's Honeybadger maintained the third spot, but is tied on points at 26 with the team of Mark Liebel and Robby Brown on Angel of Harlem.

Saturday's initial competition was finished at the second windward mark due to a dying breeze. Bomar's Bangor Packet didn't mind as he claimed his second win of the Championship, shadowed by Evan Petley-Jones' Lifted and Welles' Buckaroo. The Japanese team Siesta, led by Nobuyuki Imai, claimed the next victory following a brief on-water postponement, as Finn Hadlock's Boreas and Angel of Harlem also got in on the action. Both races five and six saw multiple starting penalties, including some of the top contenders. Following another AP, Daniel Cameron's Shake n Bake was able to end the day successfully, followed to shore by Aidan Glackin's Mental Floss and Rossi Milev's Clear Air.

Racing concludes Sunday.
