Port Dinorwic 'home grown' talent wins RS Tera World Challenge Trophy in Sweden

by Cathy Goodwin 16 Aug 2019 22:30 PDT 4-9 August 2019

Port Dinorwic Sailing Club / Clwb Hwylio Y Felinheli (PDSC/CHYF) celebrated the return of six of their youth sailors, including Jac Bailey who brought home the RS Tera World Challenge Trophy in Sweden.

PDSC has enjoyed many successes in the past with numerous national and international champions but Jac is rather unique in that he is "home grown". He has learnt and developed his sailing skills almost entirely in the club making this an amazing achievement, not just for Jac but for the club as well and most importantly for his mum (President and Head of Training at the club) - Jo Powell, who has steered the club into a position where we are able to cater for the needs of all sailors from those who have just started sailing to World Class sailors such as the six who went to Sweden.

We have a vast breadth of experience in our sailors at the club including our trainers, Jo Powell, Andy Long, Amy Barlow and Ken Newing and most recently Tats Greenhaigh, who has been offering regular free race training and coaching to all of our youth members.

But we also have access to the experience of members in the club, whether it be those with International racing or Olympic coaching experience, those who may have sailed across the globe or just those club sailors who are adept at building, setting up and maintaining their boats. All are willing to pass on the wealth of their experience. This "organic" approach to learning should not be under-estimated.

Jo has been instrumental in supplementing this with Winter training, getting the Northern Tera squads to train at the club for one weekend and also the paralympic coach, Brett Cokayne, for 2 weekends during the Winter season.

This was a chance to celebrate, not just Jac's success as World Champion, but also that of the club and Jo in helping him to get there, and in the process helping all of our youth sailors to get world class training at the club.

Well done Jac!

This is how Jac started sailing:
